Self-Publishing Can Make the Dream Come True

Self-publishing is gaining popularity all over the world. Once there was a stigma attached to self-publishing. It was believed that people published their own books because they were not good enough for a "real" publisher. That line of thought is wrong! In the next decade, as computer technology improves and trade publishers become even more dollar driven, more and more of our reading material will come from author-publishers. A whole niche is opening up for writers who are willing to do it themselves. For many it has become a chosen option.

Publishers

Writers are advised to ensure their manuscripts conform to publishers' guidelines before sending out their work. Target your submissions to publishers who have a history of producing titles similar to your manuscript. The Canadian Publishers Directory can be found at your local library, and it contains contact and submission information. Most Canadian publishing houses have a web presence—check out book lists and submission guidelines at their websites. If a publisher doesn’t publish illustrated picture books for kids or cookbooks or travel guides or mysteries or whatever, you’re not about to convince him to change his publishing program. Spend some time in bookstores looking at books and book covers that appeal to you and read book reviews published in Books in Canada, BC Bookworld, Quill and Quire, national newspapers and literary review publications.

Other authors turn to self-publishing when they cannot find a trade publisher who is interested in their manuscript....
